OneZeroFour - Phnom Penh Bar - Construction
Construction of the bar was interesting in that
we only had an idea of what we wanted but no actual design plans, the only thing
we knew was that we wanted a Terracota floor that didn't look to much like other
bars, we also wanted to brick the lower half of the walls but ended up painting
them instead. Some mirrors and a bar. The general feel we aimed for was openness
and airy but still with privacy when you sit at the bar. Sopheap wanted the bar
to have enough clearance so she could dance on it so the fans were mounted
high.
The shop house format usually includes a
mezzanine floor, which we didn't
want. So we demolished it and used the rubble to bring the floor to the same
level throughout. The floor at the back of the building was raised
nearly 15cm.
There is a Photo Album showing
various stages of construction.
When building things here you need to remember
that not many things are vertical or horizontal or even straight. Also some of
the workers don't seem to notice if things aren't straight or don't look very
good. But labour costs are so cheap that it's
normal to get them to do it twice, of course it could be a way them to just get
twice as much money.
